Bare Gravity is a sustainable jewellery brand throughout its production, acting to reduce social and environmental impact as much as possible by using only sustainably and ethically sourced materials.

Using recycled silver and gold is a no brainer, it’s exactly the same as regular silver or gold except it is just simply better for the environment. It’s an eco-friendly choice that requires no new mining.

Bare Gravity jewellery is made-to-order and consciously handcrafted one by one by the designer herself in her home studio. Orders are made as they come in that way nothing is wasted. All the silver offcuts and scraps from Bare Gravity’s production is recycled. Any casting is also produced using recycled metals.

Gemstones are ethically sourced from carefully picked and trusted suppliers.

One of my main supplier is based in Europe, he has published a few gemology and lapidary books and has a particular interest in quartz and agates. He travels once a year to Brazil to buy rough specimens directly from the miners. The stones are then cut and polished in his own workshop there where all his workers are paid European wages and are basically considered his second family.

Another way Bare Gravity minimizes impact is to try to use fewer chemicals commonly used in jewellery making by choosing less toxic and safer alternatives whenever possible.

Here, beauty, ethics, sustainability, authenticity, integrity and meaning go hand in hand.

Recycled 925 Silver?

Recycled silver is exactly the same as newly mined silver, but without the level of degradation to our natural resources caused by new mining. Mining precious metals has a massive social and environmental impact.

Recycled silver or Eco-silver is an eco-friendly alternative which is manufactured using recycled silver from the jewellery, medical and electronic industries.

All pieces sold by Bare Gravity is crafted using 100% recycled 925 silver, with the exception of some chain components, which may not contain 100% recycled metal.

Sourced from a trusted UK refiner, producer of recycled metal products. The 100% recycled silver is “produced in a fully traceable, audited and certified process”.

Integrity from mine to market, Fairtrade Gold?

Fairtrade Gold

Fairtrade Certified Gold is the world’s first independent ethical certification system for gold.

Buying Fairtrade Gold jewellery means you are supporting small-scale miners to receive a fair deal for their hard work, as well as protecting the environment and making life better for themselves and their communities. All gold is sourced from mine sites who meet the Fairtrade Gold Standard; a globally recognised marker of best practice.

These gold mines can be hazardous places, with miners working in structurally insecure pits, without protective gear and using harmful chemicals such as mercury to recover gold, which can contribute to health problems and contaminate local water supplies.

Fairtrade Gold is sourced exclusively from mines which meet the Fairtrade Gold Standard; an internationally recognised marker of best-practice. The Fairtrade Gold Standard includes strict requirements on working conditions, health and safety, handling chemicals, women’s rights, child labour and protection of the environment including water sources and forests.

Workers in Fairtrade certified gold mines receive a guaranteed Fairtrade Minimum Price for their product. Fairtrade certified mines are audited by FLOCERT to check they meet the Standard.

Bare Gravity is registered under the Fairtrade Goldsmith registration sheme.

Keum-Boo?

Keum Boo

Keum-Boo means ‘attached gold in Korean’. It is an ancient Korean technique that refers to fusing 24ct gold foil to the surface of another metal by using heat and pressure. The gold and silver molecules link at the surface and creates a durable, permanent bond.

Keum-Boo gold foil is different to gold leaf; gold leaf is thinner and will be absorbed by the silver, not fused together. (0.1 micron compared to Keum-Boo, which is 25 times thicker – 2.5 microns)

Bare Gravity uses 24ct gold foil that is 100% recycled, it is sourced from Conflict-free Smelters which conforms to international guidelines set by CFSI (Conflict Free Sourcing Initiative). It is not sourced from conflict mines.

Alpaca wool, the ultimate sustainable material?

Alpacas spend their entire lives wandering freely in their natural habitat, the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes Mountains.

Alpaca wool is one of the most ethical products currently available that is completely eco-friendly, renewable, sustainable and cruelty-free at the same time throughout its production.

Baby alpaca (the softest part of a full-grown alpaca’s coat) is just as soft as cashmere but is a completely sustainable wool.

Alpacas spend their entire lives wandering freely in their natural habitat, the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes Mountains at an altitude of more than 4000 meters.

Once a year the Alpacas are sheared by the farmers and then released back into the wild.

All Sales contribute to encourage the growth and prosperity of the communities of the Bolivian Highlands…
